The moodle system allows students to create and join groups independently. To do this, the following steps must be performed:

First, a new grouping must be created for the groups - see instructions here https://moodle25.technion.ac.il/mod/page/view.php?id=16646.

Adding a "Group self-selection" activity

In the top bar, activate edit mode (in the top right, the circle will change color to green):

In the desired teaching unit, click "+ Add an activity or resource".

In the floating menu select "Group self-selection"

Now define the activity: enter a name (e.g. "Divide into groups to submit homework 1"), define the distribution dates (it is recommended to close the activity along with the submission box), select the appropriate grouping and select the maximum and minimum number of participants in the group.

It is recommended that the activity instructions explicitly state that a student who wishes to submit alone will open a group for themselves. Without belonging to any group, the submission will not be possible.

Further in the settings, we marked whether participants can create new groups (otherwise you need to create the groups for them) and whether participants have the option to change their selection (cancel the selection they made and make a new selection).

Save and return to the course main page. A link to the activity will be added to the unit where you added it.

Student display

Students will enter the activity by clicking on the link on the main page.

If groups already exist, they will be displayed in the table and a "Become member of" button will appear in groups that have not yet reached the maximum number of participants.

In addition, a Create a New Group button will appear above the table (if you enabled it during the settings phase).

A student who creates a new group is automatically assigned to it.

If the option to change the group has been set, a "Leave group" button will appear:

After clicking cancel, the student will be able to re-associate themselves with one of the groups or create a new group.
