An assignment is a resource, defined by the teaching staff, that allows students to submit solution files and have them reviewed by the staff. The resource allows for review and grading and comments to students, without the need for printing.

Step A - Defining the Assignment

To add an assignment, follow these steps:

1. Enter the course website and activate editing

2. In the desired learning unit click "+ Add an activity or resource".

3. In the floating window, select "Assignment".

4. Fill in the relevant fields.
  • Instructions:
    • The "Description" field is the field that displays the assignment description to students.
    • The "Activity Instructions" field will only be displayed when the assignment is submitted.
  • Pay attention to the issue of dates:
    • The "Due date" field is the field that will be displayed to students in the calendar. If not set - a reminder will not appear in the calendar regarding the final submission date.
    • The "Cut-off date" field is not displayed in the calendar, but allows you to close the box permanently, meaning that after this date it will not be possible to submit at all (if not checked - you can submit late and the work will be marked accordingly).
  • "Submission types"
    • Select maximum number of files if you want each student to submit "File submissions"
    • You can limit the types of files that are allowed for submission (for example, if you want to allow submission of pdf or word files only). Click "Choose" in the "Accepted file types" section and select from the list.
  • "Feedback types"
    • It is recommended to also check "Feedback comments", "Feedback files" and "Offline grading worksheet" for the convenience of the task examiners.
    • You can upload a solution to the exercise at this stage and define when to open it for students to view and when to close it again. The solution file must be uploaded to the "Upload solution sheets" field and the deadlines must be defined in the "Show solutions to students" fields
  • "Submission settings" - here you can enable repeated submissions
  • "Group submission settings": You can enable submission in groups, meaning that students will submit the assignment in pairs/triplets/groups. In this case, please follow the instructions here https://moodle25.technion.ac.il/mod/page/view.php?id=16620.
  • "Notifications" - It is recommended to select "No" in the Default for "Notify student" section so that email notifications are not sent to students every time you save the checked version.
  • "Grade":
    • You can choose whether there will be a grade for the assignment and if so - whether it will be numerical or a scale of values.
    • "Use marking workflow" - You can hide the examiner's comments and grades until the checking is completed for all students and only at the end reveal all grades and comments to everyone. To do this, change the option for "Use marking workflow" to "Yes". This allows for non-publication of feedback until a final decision is made. Please note, select this option only if the exercise is not configured for group submission.
    • You can configure "Hide grader identity from students" to prevent the grader from being exposed to direct student inquiries.

5. At the end of the process, save the settings.

Step B - Submissions

For students, the assignment looks like this:

The assignment page for students

Clicking "Add Submission" allows you to upload a PDF file and confirm the submission.

"Add submission" page for students, where they can upload files

Step 3 – Reviewing Submissions

When entering an assignment, the teaching staff will see a summary of the status:

"Grading summary" page

In order to check the works and update grades and comments, you must perform the following steps:

  • Click on "View all submissions".
  • A screen will open with a table containing a row for each student. If the table is empty - check whether your filter is enabled and if so, cancel it. Also, look for the "Reset Table" link in the upper right corner and click on it. The display will be reset and the table will appear with the list of participants and submissions.
  • You can see all the details of all students, what their submission status is, change only the grade, write comments or check the submission file.
    • To enter grades quickly - go to the students, enter the grades in the appropriate panel and save at the end.
    • To check in a linear way: click on "Grade" in the row of the desired student. You will reach the screen where the work is displayed and on the right side a summary of the submission and grades, a place to add comments. Review the work, use the tools at the top above the displayed page to add markings/comments to the work. Then, enter general comments, upload a file with feedback if necessary, and a grade on the right side of the screen. When finished, save. You can move on to the next work using the arrows at the top.
